It was a moment of cheers and Jubilation for Ndi Abia as Professor Uche Ikonne met with the State Executives of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to formally declare his interest to serve Abians as Governor come 2023, noting that he has something extra to offer than the other aspirants.
According to Prof. Ikonne, “I am coming into the Governorship race on the strength of experience, maturity, and competence”.
“I have gained these qualities through discipleship to notable past leaders in the state, in the academics and larger society”.
Prof. Ikonne noted that his headship at Abia State University and Abia State Polytechnic further helped to equip him for greater leadership challenges.
He noted vehemently that he will consolidate on the foundation already laid by the present Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu, Ph.D., whose peaceful disposition in governance is worthy of emulation.
He promised that the state under his watch would witness massive development.
The governorship hopeful urged the party’s leadership to consider him for the ticket, saying that he can win the race for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
In their separate speeches, a former Deputy Speaker of Abia State House of Assembly and Director-General of Uche Ndi Abia Campaign Organization, Barr. Chinedum Elechi, a former Chairman of Umuahia-South Local Government Council, Barr. Randy Ukanwoko, who spoke on behalf of Stakeholders from Abia-Central Senatorial District, a University Don, Dr. Kenneth Madubuike from Abia-North, and the immediate-past Secretary of PDP in the State and current Member of the National Executive Committee of the Party, Chief Ibe Nwadioha, said that it was a good omen that Professor Uche Ikonne, who had excelled as a University Administrator while he was Vice-Chancellor of Abia State University, Uturu, has boldly indicated an interest in the governorship of the State.
They expressed optimism that with the caliber of Professor Ikonne as Governor, the people of Abia State will have every cause to be thankful to God.
In his response, the Chairman of PDP in Abia State, Rt Honourable Asiforo Okere, Ph.D., said the Party in the State was delighted to have a personality of Professor Ikonne’s background to show a substantial interest in the 2023 gubernatorial race in the State, using PDP as his platform.
He said that Professor Ikonne is an indisputably good governorship material that could stand any test of time.
He assured Professor Ikonne that the Party will create an enabling political atmosphere that will guarantee a level playing field for all Aspirants of the Party in the State.
