… Set for 2023 Population and Housing Census
The Abia State Census Security and Logistics Committee for the 2023 Population and Housing Census have been inaugurated in Umuahia, Abia State with a task to see to the success of the exercise.
Inaugurating the committee, National Population Commission, NPC Federal Commissioner, Hon. Nwanne Johnny Nwabuisi said the purpose of establishing the committee which comprises the military and paramilitary organizations was to ensure the safety and security of NPC personnel and materials before, during and after the census period.
He pointed out that the Executive Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Mr Nasir Kwarra, and Babagana Monguno, National Security Adviser have lots of confidence in the nation’s military and paramilitary organizations, hence the reason behind the inauguration of the committee at the National level, which has also trickled down to the state level.
He encouraged them not to derail from the terms of reference upon which they were inaugurated, which include among others, the provision of necessary security and logistics for enumeration of hard-to-reach population groups and areas of insecurity and transient population.
Presenting an address earlier, the Abia State NPC Director, Lady Juliana Ezebuiro reminded the Committee that their main objective was to programme and control movement of Census personnel and materials as well as advise the Commission on the general security situation of the country, and the State in particular.
She passionately appealed to the Committee to favourably answer the clarion call in order to make Abia number one in the upcoming Head Count Exercise and also direct their men in various Local Government Areas to take necessary actions and provide a functional system for the realization of “Our collective objectives and goals”.
In a goodwill message, the Branch Controller, Central Bank of Nigeria, Abia State, Mr. Olaoba Ayotunde represented by Ekpenyong Eyo appreciated the efforts of the NPC geared towards accomplishing its set goal and assured of the commitment of the CBN as a stakeholder in the exercise to ensure that the Census become a success.
He also assured that the Census materials kept at the CBN facility will remain safe and secured.
Also in their respective remarks, the Federal Road Safety Corp, FRSC Sector Command, Corp Commander Paul Ugwu, and the State Director of DSS, Mr. Friday Onuche represented by the Principal Staff Officer, Mr. Obasi Ikechukwu commended the NPC for organizing the inaugural meeting and for the remarkable achievement it recorded during the trial census and enumeration demarcation exercise conducted in the year 2022 as well as for the demonstration of confidence to deliver a reliable and credible 2023 Population and Housing Census.
They assured that they will continue to partner and be in synergy with fellow Security Agencies as it affects giving the right intelligence at the appropriate time to ensure that the census will be a success.
Presenting an acceptance speech on behalf of the committee, the Assistant Commissioner of Police, AC Operations, ACP Alabi Adebowale assured that the committee will work together to ensure a hitch free and a successful 2023 head count geared towards achieving a meaningful development of the nation.
