Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, has expressed approval of the Supreme Court’s ruling granting independence to Local Government Councils, describing it as a commendable democratic step.
The governor shared his comments after a private discussion with President Bola Tinubu at the State House.
“That’s great. I mean, the Supreme Court is supreme because it is the final authority and I am a democrat. I believe in the rule of law. Once the Supreme Court has spoken, it has spoken,” Soludo remarked. “I understand the Governors Forum is meeting tonight to review this decision.”
Governor Soludo noted that he had not yet reviewed the complete ruling but had seen portions of it. He emphasized the importance of channeling resources to the grassroots and ensuring public funds benefit people at all government levels.
“We need resources to get down to the real grassroots, and we need the people’s money to work for them at all levels, whether at the federal, state, or local government,” he said. “We need to promote accountability and transparency in the utilization of public resources at all levels to lift the burden of the common man.”
The Supreme Court’s decision is seen as a significant move toward strengthening local governance and ensuring better resource management across the country.
