The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a stern warning, directing all workers across the country to shut down the economy if its President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, is arrested by the police. This development follows an invitation extended to Ajaero by the police over allegations of terrorism financing.
In response, the NLC convened an emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting at the Labour House, during which the union resolved to request an extension of time from the police to allow consultation with its legal team.
Speaking at the emergency meeting, NLC Deputy President, Kabiru Ado Sani, emphasized that the invitation to Ajaero was tantamount to an invitation to all Nigerian workers.
“At the end of the meeting, we reached certain resolutions. As a committed labour centre, we agreed to abide by the rule of law and due process. We will honour the invitation of the Nigerian police because we are not a faceless organisation. However, we believe we need an extension of time after consultation with our lawyers,” Sani stated.
He further clarified that while the NLC is prepared to cooperate with the authorities, this does not validate the charges brought against the union’s leadership.
In a strong show of solidarity, the NLC resolved that if Ajaero is arrested or detained, all workers across the country will be mobilized to down tools and halt services nationwide.
“This organisation belongs to all of us, and we must do everything possible to safeguard its safety,” Sani added.
The NLC urged its members to remain calm and await further directives from the leadership, emphasizing the importance of unity and vigilance during this critical period. The union promised to communicate any developments promptly to ensure coordinated action across the country.
Workers have been advised to return to their workplaces peacefully while awaiting further instructions.
