Olumide Osagie Akpata, the Labour Party candidate in the 2024 Edo State gubernatorial election, has announced his decision not to challenge the results of the election in court. In a detailed statement, Akpata explained that his decision was not based on the election’s legality but rather a broader reflection on Nigeria’s democratic process and the need for systemic electoral reforms.

Akpata, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and former President of the Nigerian Bar Association, stressed that the irregularities in the election, from vote-buying to flawed legal procedures, are symptomatic of deeper systemic issues in Nigeria’s electoral framework. However, he emphasized that contesting the results in court would not address these larger problems, which he called “a battle for the soul of our democracy.”

Rather than pursuing a legal challenge, Akpata stated that his focus would be on comprehensive electoral reforms and strengthening civic education. His strategy includes forming a strong opposition to hold the Edo State government accountable, advocating for electoral law overhaul, and collaborating with civil society organizations to foster a democratic renaissance in Edo State.

He also dismissed rumors of a potential alliance with the All Progressives Congress (APC), categorically denying any backroom deals or agreements with the party.

Akpata’s message to his supporters was one of resilience and hope, as he urged them to continue the fight for a transparent and just electoral system. He ended by pledging his commitment to Edo State’s progress and encouraging collective action toward strengthening Nigeria’s democracy.
