The Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Martin Amaewhule, has issued a 7-day ultimatum to Governor Siminalayi Fubara, demanding the re-presentation of the 2024 budget to the House. This directive was announced following the first sitting of the pro-Wike faction of the House on Monday after a prolonged hiatus. Concurrently, a parallel session was held by another faction of the House led by Victor Oko-Jumbo.
Governor Fubara initially presented the budget to a House loyal to him, with his current Chief of Staff, Edison Ehie, presiding as the Speaker. The pro-Fubara lawmakers swiftly passed the budget estimates, which were subsequently signed into law by the governor. Governor Fubara emphasized that the budget is designed to promote economic development, foster inclusive growth, and address socio-economic inequalities within the state.
The ultimatum by the Amaewhule-led Assembly underscores the ongoing political tensions and factionalism within the Rivers State legislature. The coming days will be critical as the Governor responds to the Assembly’s demands amidst the unfolding political drama.
In the meantime, a separate session is taking place with the House group under the leadership of Victor Oko-Jumbo.
