By Section 14 (2) (b) of the Nigerian Constitution, the security and welfare of the people shall be the primary purpose of government. However, Akwa Ibom State is grappling with multi-dimensional poverty, crumbling public education, a lack of public water supply, and civil servants not earning living wages. Youth unemployment is rampant, and these pressing issues demand urgent intervention from Governor Umo Eno.
Despite these challenges, Governor Eno has yet to address any of these critical issues. Instead, he has allocated over N9 billion in the 2024 budget for the “renovation of lodges” and plans to purchase around 400 luxury vehicles for the office of the Secretary to the State Government (SSG).
The entire budget is filled with questionable and extravagant items, while the people of Akwa Ibom are struggling with hunger and poverty. Governor Eno’s current focus is on constructing a 19-story tower in Lagos under the guise of investment.
There has been no accountability for the billions of naira collected so far. The resources appear to be wasted on sustaining lavish lifestyles rather than addressing the state’s real issues. Meanwhile, the governor wants the public to believe that Akwa Ibom has a revenue problem.
This is misleading. Akwa Ibom’s real problem lies in its expenditure and wastages, not in revenue generation.
It is time for the people of Akwa Ibom to say ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.
