Rivers State, Nigeria.
The Coalition of Rivers State Leaders has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to intervene in the ongoing political conflict between Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike and his successor, Governor Siminalayi Fubara. The coalition argues that presidential intervention is crucial to safeguarding the state from further instability.
The group criticized the federal government for its perceived neglect of the situation, which they believe is intensifying tensions within Rivers State. They warned that the protracted standoff between Wike and Fubara could escalate into a severe conflict if not promptly addressed.
Chief Sunnie Chukumele, leading the coalition, condemned what they described as attempts by Wike’s allies to destabilize the current administration. The coalition took particular issue with recent comments by Tony Okocha, former Interim Committee Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, who accused Governor Fubara of orchestrating the Anti-Bad Governance Protest—an accusation the coalition deems inflammatory.
During a media briefing on Wednesday, the Coalition also criticized the faction of the Assembly led by Rt. Hon. Martins Amaewhule for allegedly trying to deprive the state of funds through the courts. They warned that such actions could trigger a crisis.
Additionally, the Coalition denounced former Local Government Chairmen who have refused to vacate their positions despite the expiration of their terms, calling for their immediate resignation to avoid further complications.
