President Bola Tinubu has issued a directive to curtail the size of Nigeria’s official delegation to the upcoming United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, ensuring that only officials with official business attend.

The directive was disclosed by the Chief of Staff to the President, Honourable Femi Gbajabiamila, during a one-day retreat organized by the State House management for the leaders of government agencies under its oversight.

Gbajabiamila noted, “I just discussed with the President this afternoon. In the next few weeks, we are going to see a test of this policy during UNGA in New York.”

He further explained, “There have been concerns about the high cost of governance, particularly during recent protests. All eyes are on Nigeria to see if, as in the past, we will send the ‘largest delegation’ to UNGA. From experience, we know that some individuals use such international meetings to conduct personal business.”

He emphasized that the President’s directive is clear: “If you have no business at the UN General Assembly, do not step foot in America. This is a directive from Mr. President.”

This move aligns with ongoing efforts to reduce government expenditure and ensure that public resources are utilized efficiently.
