The Forum of Former Members of the Rivers State Executive Council under Governor Wike has issued a strong statement condemning the ongoing occupation of Local Government Secretariat Headquarters in Rivers State by officers of the Nigeria Police Force. This action, which persists despite a Court of Appeal judgment declaring the tenure of the former LGA Chairmen illegal, has been described by the forum as unconstitutional and a violation of local governance rights.
In a press release, the forum expressed its displeasure at the continuous occupation and questioned the legitimacy of the Police’s actions, labeling it both provocative and vexatious. They argued that the Police’s decision to seal the local headquarters is an affront to the judiciary and the Nigerian Constitution.
The forum also called on the Inspector General of Police to immediately order the withdrawal of officers from the local councils, emphasizing that their presence not only disrupts governance but also undermines the constitution’s provisions on local government administration. They further urged President Bola Tinubu to intervene and ensure the Police cease these actions, which they believe tarnish the country’s human rights records.
Expressing their support for Governor Siminalayi Fubara, the forum commended his developmental strides and commitment to upholding the rule of law, while calling for continued service delivery without fear of intimidation. They also reaffirmed their dedication to working with the governor to propel Rivers State to greater heights.
The statement was signed by prominent former members of the Rivers State Executive Council, including Chief Barr Emeh Glory Emeh, Dr. Tamunosisi Gogo Jaja, and Dr. Emma Okah, among others.
