Adamawa State government has officially commenced the payment of a N70,000 minimum wage to workers across the state.
This new wage structure fulfills the governor’s pledge during a meeting with the Labour Union on August 19, 2024. The governor’s promise has now materialized with the August salaries, much to the satisfaction of the state’s civil servants.
Speaking with reporters after receiving their salaries, several civil servants expressed their appreciation for Governor Fintiri’s dedication to workers’ welfare. Saliyatu Mohammad, a civil servant in the Ministry of Land and Survey, praised the governor for his commitment, noting that this gesture demonstrates his concern for the well-being of state employees.
Mr. Emmanuel Amos Tumba, a school teacher in the state, confirmed the salary increase, saying, “I can confirm to you that the salary increase has been effected and I received it. I commend the governor for this.”
The decision to implement the N70,000 minimum wage was officially approved by Governor Fintiri on August 19, 2024, for all workers on the state and local government payrolls. The State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Emmanuel Fashe, disclosed this development shortly after leading labour leaders to a meeting with the governor.
According to Comrade Fashe, state government workers began receiving salaries with the new minimum wage in August 2024, while local government employees will start benefiting in September.
With this development, Adamawa State has become the first state in the country to implement the N70,000 minimum wage, following its enactment into law by President Bola Tinubu. This move has been widely hailed as a significant step forward in improving the living standards of workers in the state.
