Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, the National Security Adviser (NSA) of Nigeria, has taken legal action against Anthony Aziegbemi, the Edo State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), over allegations of election interference and corruption. The suit follows Aziegbemi’s claim that the presidency, through Ribadu and the Department of State Services (DSS), is planning to manipulate the forthcoming gubernatorial election in Edo State.
In a press statement titled “EDO 2024: PRESIDENCY’S MOVE TO INTERFERE, MANIPULATE GUBER POLL USING DSS, NSA UNCOVERED,” Aziegbemi accused Ribadu of authorizing the release of $2 million to the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for vote-buying and bribing security personnel.
Ribadu, through his legal team at Charles Musa and Co., condemned the statement as defamatory, arguing that the allegations have severely damaged his reputation. The law firm stated that Aziegbemi’s claims are baseless and contradictory to Ribadu’s long-standing commitment to integrity and anti-corruption efforts. Ribadu, who previously served as the Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), is known for his efforts in combating corruption and upholding ethical standards.
In a letter to Aziegbemi, Ribadu’s legal representatives demanded:
1. A written apology to Mallam Nuhu Ribadu.
2. A full retraction of the statement in five national newspapers, ten online news sites, seven television stations, and ten radio stations.
3. Payment of N10 billion in damages for reputational harm.
The letter also warned that if these demands are not met within seven days, legal action will be pursued to enforce Ribadu’s rights and protect his reputation.
This lawsuit comes ahead of the 2024 Edo State gubernatorial election, highlighting the political tensions between major parties and officials in the lead-up to the poll.
