The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has responded to recent allegations by the Governor of Rivers State, His Excellency Siminalayi Fubara, clarifying its role in the state’s electoral process. The Police emphasized that their actions have been in strict adherence to a Federal High Court order and reaffirmed their political neutrality.
The allegations surfaced following the deployment of officers to the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RIEC) office on the evening of October 3, 2024. Governor Fubara accused the NPF, particularly the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), of undue interference in the elections. In response, the NPF has refuted these claims, stating that their involvement was limited to ensuring security for the RIEC premises.
The NPF highlighted that a Federal High Court order had previously barred the Police from participating in the Rivers elections. This order was acknowledged and respected by the NPF, with the IGP directing the Commissioner of Police in Rivers State to stay clear of the election process. However, intelligence reports suggested that security personnel from the Rivers State Government House had been deployed to the RIEC office. This prompted the IGP to approve the withdrawal of those officers and replace them with personnel from the Command Operations Department, tasked solely with securing the facility overnight.
The NPF stressed that their actions were based on credible intelligence following a series of security breaches in the state. The overnight deployment was a precautionary measure to prevent any attacks on the RIEC office amid the heightened tension due to legal disputes surrounding the elections.
Reacting to Governor Fubara’s criticism, including his accusations against the Inspector-General of Police, the NPF expressed dismay over the governor’s comments. The Police noted that the governor’s outburst, which included inflammatory remarks, was uncalled for and urged restraint and decorum in political matters.
In response to the situation, the NPF has increased security across Rivers State, underlining its commitment to maintaining law and order. Citizens have been advised to continue their daily activities without fear, as the NPF, in collaboration with other security agencies, ensures the protection of lives and property in the state.
