The Rivers State Government has officially approved a new minimum wage of N85,000 for civil servants in the state, marking a significant step towards improving the welfare of public sector workers. The announcement was made by the Head of Service, George Nwaeke, following a closed-door meeting between Governor Siminalayi Fubara, labour leaders, and senior government officials.
During the meeting, Governor Fubara gave the green light for the implementation of the new minimum wage, which will take effect immediately. This move has been welcomed by the state’s workforce, many of whom have been anticipating an increase in wages amidst rising living costs.
Chukwu Emecheta, Chairman of the Joint Negotiation Team, commended Governor Fubara for his dedication to meeting the needs of Rivers State workers. He expressed gratitude on behalf of the labour union, noting that the new wage will significantly improve the livelihoods of civil servants.
“We appreciate Governor Fubara’s swift action in addressing our concerns and fulfilling his promise to the workers of Rivers State,” Emecheta stated.
Speaking on the impact of the wage increase, the Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Rivers State, Alex Agwanwor, emphasized the relief the new minimum wage will bring to workers facing economic challenges.
“This increase comes at a time when many workers are struggling with rising prices and inflation. The new wage will go a long way in alleviating the economic burdens faced by civil servants in the state,” Agwanwor noted.
