The Abia State Government officially signed an agreement with Organized Labour to implement the New National Minimum Wage, including consequential adjustments. This agreement formalizes the adoption of the new wage structure in the state, setting a minimum salary of N70,000 for Grade Level 1, Step 1 workers, with adjustments for higher grades.
Governor Alex Otti, represented by Chief of Staff Pastor Caleb Ajagba, expressed satisfaction with the agreement, calling it a “win-win” for both the government and the workforce. “I am glad to announce on behalf of the Abia State Government that we have reached a win-win outcome for all parties,” he said.
Pastor Ajagba thanked Organized Labour for their patience throughout the negotiation process, confirming that the updated wages would soon be reflected in workers’ salaries.
Speaking on behalf of Organized Labour, Abia State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Ogbonnaya Okoro, described the day as a “landmark moment” for Abia workers. He expressed gratitude to Governor Otti, government officials, and technical teams, acknowledging the “long-awaited wage issue has come to light.” Comrade Okoro assured workers that this development marked only the beginning of positive changes.
The state Head of Service, Mrs. Ngozi Queen Obioma, gave a vote of thanks, commending Governor Otti for his dedication and support throughout the process. She assured the administration that workers would honor the goodwill shown by the government.
