In a strategic move to enhance operational efficiency and self-reliance, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has successfully reconfigured four pre-owned fuel tankers into specialised aircraft refuelling bowsers.
The transformation was carried out under the supervision of the 643 Equipment Supply Depot in Lagos, reflecting the vision of the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, to entrench proactive logistics support and deepen maintenance culture within the force.
According to a statement by the Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet, the modified bowsers symbolize more than just mobile fuel tanks—they reflect the NAF’s increasing emphasis on nnovation, adaptability, and operational autonomy.
Air Marshal Abubakar emphasized that the reconfigured bowsers will play a crucial role in ongoing air operations, particularly in counterterrorism efforts and joint deployments, by ensuring rapid and reliable aircraft refuelling. The initiative is expected to optimise turnaround times, enhance persistent air presence, and bolster mission readiness in complex and high-tempo environments.
The development aligns with the NAF’s broader strategy to leverage homegrown solutions for sustaining airpower and reducing dependence on external logistics support.
