Nigeria’s total merchandise trade reached ₦36.02 trillion in the first quarter of 2025, reflecting a 6.19% increase compared to ₦33.93 trillion recorded in the same period last year, according to the latest data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

The report shows that total exports stood at ₦20.60 trillion, up 7.42% from ₦19.18 trillion in Q1 2024 and a 2.92% rise compared to ₦20.01 trillion in the fourth quarter of 2024. This indicates continued momentum in Nigeria’s export activities.

On the import side, ₦15.43 trillion worth of goods were imported in Q1 2025. This marks a 4.59% increase from ₦14.75 trillion in Q1 2024 but represents a 7.02% decline from the ₦16.59 trillion recorded in Q4 2024, suggesting a slight slowdown in import activity at the start of the year.

The trade balance remained positive, with exports exceeding imports by over ₦5 trillion, indicating a favorable trade surplus that could support Nigeria’s macroeconomic stability efforts.
