The Delta State House of Assembly has unveiled plans to introduce a bill aimed at curbing arbitrary rent increases and making housing more affordable for residents across the state.

Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor, announced the development during a press conference held in Asaba to mark the end of the Second Session and the second anniversary of the 8th Assembly.

Guwor said the proposed legislation, titled *“A Bill to Regulate House Rent in Delta State,”* is a response to increasing concerns over soaring rents, especially in urban areas such as Asaba, Warri, Sapele, and Ughelli, which have posed a major challenge for low- and middle-income earners.

“We cannot ignore the cries of our people who are being priced out of decent accommodation,” Guwor stated. “This Assembly is determined to bring relief through legislative action that protects both tenants and landlords while promoting fair housing policies.”

The bill, sponsored by House Leader Hon. Emeka Nwaobi and 27 other lawmakers, has already been listed for first reading. The Speaker emphasized that stakeholder engagement will be central to the bill’s development. Groups to be consulted include the Ministry of Housing, real estate developers, landlords’ associations, and civil society organizations.

The rent control bill is expected to be tabled in the next legislative session, with hopes that it will stabilize the housing sector and provide relief to struggling Deltans.

Guwor also highlighted the Assembly’s achievements over the past year, citing several landmark bills, effective oversight, and strong collaboration with the executive branch, all aimed at strengthening governance and development in the state.

“Our second anniversary is not just a time to celebrate but to reaffirm our commitment to the people,” he said, lauding the Assembly’s diligence and unity in executing its legislative responsibilities.
