President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid a heartfelt tribute to former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd), on the occasion of his 83rd birthday, praising his enduring contributions to Nigeria’s democratic journey and national stability.
In a personally signed statement, President Tinubu described the elder statesman as a “patriot of uncommon integrity” and commended his decades of exceptional service to the nation, both as a military officer and in retirement.
“I salute him for his decades of exceptional service to Nigeria, both in uniform and in retirement,” the President stated, “and commend his steadfast commitment to peace, stability, and good governance across the African continent.”
President Tinubu highlighted General Abubakar’s pivotal role in Nigeria’s democratic transition in 1999, calling it a “watershed moment” that laid the foundation for the Fourth Republic. He acknowledged the former leader’s selflessness in voluntarily handing over power — an act that has been widely celebrated as a defining point in Nigeria’s democratic history.
As Chairman of the National Peace Committee, the President noted that General Abubakar continues to be a guiding voice in promoting dialogue, diffusing political tension, and advocating for credible electoral processes in Nigeria.
“He is a voice of moderation, reason, and statesmanship at a time when unity and strong leadership are most needed,” President Tinubu added.
The President concluded by wishing the retired Generalcontinued strength, good health, and divine grace, while emphasizing that Nigeria remains deeply grateful for his unwavering dedication to national unity, peace, and democratic development.
