The President of the Ariaria International Market Traders Association (AIMATA), Deacon Michael Ogbonnaya Aniorji, has dismissed a widely circulated demolition notice allegedly issued by Checkbest International Limited, describing it as unauthorized and misleading.
The notice, which listed several zones in the market for demolition between July 6 and 14, 2025, sparked widespread concern among traders. However, in an exclusive interview with The Eyes Opener News, Aniorji clarified that the letter lacks official backing from both the Abia State Government and the Ministry of Trade and Commerce.
He emphasized that the contractor had not met necessary government conditions—particularly the provision of a relocation site for affected traders—before any demolition could begin.
Aniorji also disclosed his recent meeting with the Commissioner for Trade and Commerce, Mr. Kingsley Chibueze Nwokocha, who affirmed that no contractor is authorized to issue demolition directives independently.
Meanwhile, traders are calling on the government to compel the contractor to remove visible foundation markers and signs in the affected areas, citing growing anxiety and fear of displacement.
Reassuring the market community, Aniorji urged traders to stay calm, stating that no demolition would occur without proper governmental procedure. He praised Governor Alex Otti for his trader-friendly policies and commitment to market welfare.
The clarification has brought significant relief to thousands of traders worried about possible disruptions to their businesses.
