A major showdown looms today within the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) as deepening internal crises threaten to tear the party further apart. The controversy centers on the position of National Secretary and the fate of the party’s disputed 100th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, originally scheduled for today in Abuja.
Rival factions within the PDP are currently at loggerheads, each planning to hold parallel NEC and National Caucus meetings, intensifying fears of a full-blown leadership crisis.
The faction loyal to the Acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, has announced a postponement of the NEC meeting. However, another faction led by the Deputy National Chairman (South), Ambassador Taofeek Arapaja, insists that the meeting will proceed as scheduled.
In a dramatic twist, both factions have fixed separate meetings for today at the same venue, further compounding the confusion. Damagum’s camp is scheduled to hold its expanded caucus meeting at 1:00 pm, while Arapaja’s faction has slated the NEC meeting for 2:00 pm.
The conflicting schedules and hardline postures have raised questions about the unity and stability of the party ahead of critical political engagements. As of press time, it remains unclear which faction will gain legitimacy or whether a compromise will be reached to salvage the situation.
