Abuja, July 6, 2025 — The African Democratic Congress, ADC has accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of acting out of political fear rather than genuine concern for the Nigerian people, following the federal government’s announcement of planned reforms to tackle food insecurity and improve exports.
In a press statement signed by Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC’s Interim National Publicity Secretary and National Coalition Spokesperson, the party described the administration’s recent reform drive as a “scramble for survival” rather than meaningful governance.
The ADC’s criticism comes in response to a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Tinubu on Information and Strategy, who had announced the administration’s intention to remove bottlenecks hindering food security and exports.
According to Abdullahi, this declaration serves as an admission that the government had the capacity to address these challenges but chose not to—until now.

“When Bayo Onanuga tweeted that all bottlenecks would be removed to achieve food sovereignty and enable exports, he didn’t just make a policy announcement, he made a confession,” the ADC said. “A confession that this government had, by design, been sitting on its hands while Nigerians starved.”
The party claimed that the administration’s sudden reform push was triggered by the growing popularity of the ADC and a recently unveiled united opposition coalition, not by any newfound urgency to address Nigeria’s deepening economic crisis.
> “It wasn’t the hunger of hundreds of millions of Nigerians that moved them—it was fear,” Abdullahi stated. “Fear of the 2027 elections. Fear that Nigerians have woken up.”
The ADC accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of “deliberately weaponizing poverty,” arguing that the government’s failure to act earlier on food insecurity and economic instability was part of a political strategy.
> “If the bottlenecks Onanuga referred to could have been removed earlier, why were they left in place while businesses collapsed and people went hungry?” the statement asked. “Was it to stage a last-minute, propaganda-driven performance closer to the 2027 elections?”
Abdullahi asserted that the Tinubu administration is more focused on campaign optics than genuine governance, warning Nigerians not to be deceived by “choreographed press releases and sudden awakenings.”
> “The President is not governing. He is campaigning, two years early, because he knows he’s in trouble. This is not governance. This is desperation.”
The ADC concluded by urging citizens to remain vigilant and not allow “panic-driven politics” to distract from the real issues affecting their lives.
