In a meeting held today with shop owners, mall managers, and senior government officials, the Governor addressed concerns raised by Ebonyi residents and business operators about the deteriorating conditions at the state’s premier commercial hub.
“The primary objective of constructing the Ebonyi Shopping Mall was to stimulate economic activity, create jobs, and offer commercial convenience to our citizens,” Governor Nwifuru stated. “It gives me great joy to see our people thriving in that space, but recent challenges have required decisive action.”
As an immediate measure, the State Government has undertaken to offset the electricity debt owed to the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC), in line with its existing agreement. In addition, the Government plans to enter negotiations with EEDC to establish a more manageable monthly electricity billing system for the mall, taking into account the current economic realities.
Governor Nwifuru also revealed that the Government will now assume responsibility for the maintenance of critical infrastructure within the mall, including escalators, air conditioning units, and backup power systems.
In a major administrative shake-up, the Government has terminated the contract of 3rd Retail Africa, the firm previously in charge of managing the mall. The decision follows an on-the-spot assessment conducted by the Governor during his visit earlier today.
Management responsibilities have now been transferred to the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on the Shopping Mall, who will oversee daily operations until further notice.
Announcing a significant milestone, the Governor confirmed that electricity has already been restored to the mall, marking the beginning of a new phase in its operation.
“These actions are being taken in good faith,” said Governor Nwifuru, “with the singular goal of ensuring that the people of Ebonyi get the best value from this important economic facility.”
The Ebonyi Shopping Mall remains a flagship infrastructure project in the state, designed to attract investment, empower local businesses, and enhance the retail experience for residents and visitors alike.
