Senator Ireti Kingibe of the Labour Party (LP), representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has dismissed widespread rumours suggesting she has defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing such claims as “false, inaccurate, and a complete fabrication.”

Speaking with journalists in Abuja on Saturday, Kingibe firmly denied any move to leave the LP, clarifying that her recent remarks at a political coalition event were misinterpreted.

The speculation began following her appearance at a high-profile opposition coalition gathering, where figures from various political parties—including the LP, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), All Progressives Congress (APC), and Social Democratic Party (SDP)—announced support for the ADC as a potential unifying platform ahead of the 2027 general elections.

During the event, Kingibe was quoted as saying, “I am totally and completely committed to ADC”, a statement that sparked rumours of her defection.

However, the senator explained that her comment was meant to show solidarity with the coalition’s ideals, not to declare a shift in party allegiance. “I am still in LP,” she stated. “Just because I attend coalition events does not mean I have defected.”

Addressing further speculation, Kingibe said any future political decisions would be made transparently. “Obviously, as the senator representing the FCT, don’t expect me to just take a lunch break and go collect a card,” she quipped. “If I were to leave, it wouldn’t be done quietly.”

She reaffirmed her commitment to the Labour Party and to her constituents in the FCT. “We, including Peter Obi and others, are still in LP. My commitment remains unchanged,” Kingibe added.
