In an official notice signed by the Council Manager, the local government announced the revocation of the old names of 24 streets within the LGA, many of which bore Igbo names, and their replacement with new ones largely reflecting Yoruba cultural and political figures.

The renaming exercise, according to the council, was a formal policy decision to reflect “community heritage and identity.” However, the move has stirred debates over ethnic representation and inclusiveness in Lagos’ multicultural landscape.

The council did not provide further justification for the specific choices of names, but the change has generated varying reactions from community members and civil rights advocates. While some hail the renaming as a recognition of local icons, others criticize it as marginalizing non-Yoruba communities in Lagos.

The renaming is effective immediately, according to the official statement.
