Anyigba, Kogi State — Tragedy struck the academic community of Kogi State University, Anyigba, as a senior lecturer, Dr. Olabode Abimbola Ibikunle, was found dead in a hotel room under controversial circumstances.
According to preliminary reports, Dr. Ibikunle, a married father and well-known lecturer in the Faculty of Education, allegedly checked into a local hotel three days prior with a 200-level female student of the institution. The student, believed to be studying Social Studies Education, hails from the Ebira ethnic group.
Witness accounts and unconfirmed reports suggest that the lecturer had consumed a large quantity of energy drinks before the encounter, allegedly in preparation for an intimate engagement. While the first round reportedly went without incident, he reportedly collapsed while preparing for a second round and could not be revived.
An alarm was raised by the student, who is now in police custody. She reportedly told investigators that she had no idea how he died. However, law enforcement sources say foul play has not been ruled out, and toxicology tests are expected to determine whether poisoning or other factors contributed to his death.
Meanwhile, the news of Dr. Ibikunle’s sudden demise has sparked mixed reactions among students on campus. Some have taken to social media, trending the incident with memes and captions, highlighting his reputation as a strict and demanding lecturer.
The university management and police authorities are yet to issue an official statement, but investigations are ongoing.
