The revelation was made by the PDP Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Ibrahim Abdullahi, during an interview on Arise Television. Abdullahi described Obi as a “valuable political asset” whose return would significantly enhance the PDP’s electoral prospects.

“Peter Obi is our product. We want to get him back, indeed, because he is a very, very great capital for any political party,” Abdullahi stated.

He praised Obi’s performance in the 2023 presidential election, where the former governor secured over six million votes nationwide despite what Abdullahi alleged were “massive rigging” and “institutional frustrations” aimed at undermining his chances.

“If he had not gone the way he did in the last dispensation and had not faced the institutional obstacles that were placed in his path, we are confident he would have performed even better. That he was still able to command over six million votes shows he is not a candidate to ignore,” Abdullahi added.

Obi, who defected from the PDP to join the Labour Party shortly before the 2022 primaries, finished third in the 2023 presidential race, behind PDP’s Atiku Abubakar and the eventual winner, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC). His strong appeal, particularly among young voters and in urban centres, has cemented his status as a key figure in Nigeria’s opposition politics.

Abdullahi acknowledged that Obi’s exit from the PDP was a major blow at the time, but maintained that the former vice-presidential candidate still commands great respect within the party.

“Every political party that gets the opportunity to have him will be at an advantage. And certainly, PDP is not giving up on that effort,” he affirmed.

He further revealed that the PDP is currently engaged in internal consultations and long-term strategic planning aimed at uniting opposition forces ahead of 2027, with Obi’s potential return forming a key component of that strategy.

“In the fullness of time, we believe we might get him back. It will be a big boost to the PDP,” Abdullahi said.
