Abuja – The All Progressives Congress (APC) has strongly condemned the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for criticizing the state burial accorded to the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing the opposition party’s stance as “insensitive, unacceptable and unconscionable.”

In a statement issued on Saturday by its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, the APC accused the ADC of politicizing a moment of national mourning, after the latter alleged that President Bola Tinubu’s administration was exploiting the former president’s death for political gains.

The ADC had, in a statement on Friday, July 18, taken issue with the conduct of the state burial and expressions of sympathy by government officials, insinuating that these were politically motivated rather than genuine acts of respect.

Responding, the APC said the ADC’s reaction “showcased a complete lack of understanding of customary state practice,” and labelled the opposition party “a dump of Nigeria’s internally displaced politicians” whose actions were driven by desperation.

“That the ADC is blowing up over the state burial of the late President only reflects the party’s duplicity and insensitivity,” the APC said. “What would the ADC have had President Tinubu do? Deny the late President Buhari the honour of a befitting state burial? Withhold empathy and support for the bereaved former first family?”

The ruling party described President Tinubu’s response to Buhari’s passing as compassionate and patriotic, noting that he oversaw and participated in the funeral rites of a man who had served the country as a soldier, military Head of State, and two-term civilian president.

“It is unacceptable for the ADC to politicize a solemn moment of national grief,” the statement added, criticizing the ADC’s comments as beyond the bounds of justifiable opposition politics. “Clearly, the party and its villainous leaders have allowed their humanity to be corroded by desperation for inordinate and self-serving power.”

Morka urged Nigerians to remain vigilant against what he called “a band of political marauders” in the ADC, warning that the party offered nothing constructive except “peddling falsehood and vilifying a President who is hard at work for the transformation and progress of our nation.”

The statement concluded by reaffirming APC’s commitment to honouring the legacy of former President Buhari and supporting his grieving family.
