Speaking during plenary at the Senate chambers yesterday, Akpabio dismissed the reports as false and misleading, cautioning Nigerians against relying on unverified information from social media.

“I hope that the way Africans use social media will not break society; that is my only hope,” the Senate President said. “You see, even for appointments to be made, they will go and create fake letterhead paper and write that the person has rejected the appointment.”

Akpabio emphasized that the creation of new states is a constitutional matter that must go through due legislative process involving the National Assembly and state Houses of Assembly—not just something announced on social media.

“The creation of a state passes through various state Houses of Assembly. It is a constitutional matter and not just a social media thing,” he stated. “I have even seen communities holding meetings on how they will develop their new state.”

He urged the public to disregard the false reports and called for more responsible use of digital platforms to prevent the spread of misinformation.
