The bill, titled “A Bill for an Act to Prohibit Public and Civil Servants from Using Private Schools and Health Care Services and for Related Matters (HB 2487),” was presented on Tuesday during plenary.
Addressing journalists at the National Assembly, Hon. Amobi Godwin Ogah said the move is designed to restore public confidence in Nigeria’s struggling education and healthcare systems.
“This bill intends to prohibit all public and civil servants, including their immediate family members, from patronising private schools and healthcare services in order to avoid conflict of interest, maintain public trust and ensure high uncompromised standards and integrity of these public institutions,” Ogah stated.
He emphasized that the same commitment used to implement the removal of petroleum subsidy must be applied to this proposal if Nigeria is to reform its public institutions meaningfully.
“This marks a turning point in our collective effort to reverse the decay in our public schools and hospitals,” he added.
The bill has sparked conversations across the country, with advocates seeing it as a necessary step to ensure that leaders experience the same services as the citizens they serve.
