Port Harcourt — The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has announced Thursday, August 28, 2025, as the new date for the Local Government Council Elections across the state.

According to the revised timetable released by the commission, the electoral process kicks off with a stakeholder meeting and the formal announcement of the postponed election on Monday, July 28, 2025.
The schedule includes key activities such as political party primaries, submission and screening of candidates, issuance and return of nomination forms, campaign periods, and the final publication of eligible contestants.
Key highlights of the timetable:
- Stakeholders meeting and election announcement: Monday, 28th July 2025
- Expression of interest by political parties: 28th to 30th July 2025
- Party primaries: 31st July to 1st August 2025
- Submission of candidates’ names: 2nd to 4th August 2025
- Issuance of nomination forms: 5th to 6th August 2025
- Return of completed forms: 7th August 2025
- Validation of nomination papers: 8th to 9th August 2025
- Campaigns officially begin: 11th August 2025
- Final list publication: 23rd August 2025
- Election Day: Thursday, 28th August 2025
Run-off and supplementary elections:
- Chairmanship run-off (if needed): Saturday, 6th September 2025
- Elections into wards with no nominated candidates: Saturday, 6th September 2025
- Adjourned polls: Saturday, 6th September 2025
- 2nd run-off (if necessary): Saturday, 13th September 2025
The timetable is in accordance with the provisions of the RSIEC Law No. 2 of 2018 (as amended). RSIEC urged political parties, candidates, and stakeholders to comply fully with the schedule to ensure a peaceful and credible election.
