The approval was granted on Thursday during the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting held in Abuja.
According to the Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, the initiative is part of the government’s broader agenda to promote sustainable energy and reduce dependency on the national power grid.
“This is a major milestone in the transformation of our tertiary education infrastructure,” Adelabu said. “It will significantly lower energy costs, reduce reliance on diesel generators, and provide a clean, stable source of power to support learning, research, and healthcare delivery.”
The institutions earmarked for the electrification projects include:
University of Lagos (UNILAG)
Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria
Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife
University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN)
University of Ibadan (UI)
University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan
Federal University, Wukari (Taraba State)
Two additional institutions, yet to be named
In a related development, the FEC also approved ₦68.7 billion for solar power projects in rural communities and agricultural clusters currently not connected to the national grid.
Adelabu described both projects as strategic investments aimed at stimulating economic growth, enhancing innovation, and driving inclusive development across Nigeria.
