The surprising declaration was made on Monday by the State PDP Chairman, Hon. Abayomi Tella, during the official flag-off and inauguration of the campaign council for the August 16 House of Representatives bye-election in Remo Federal Constituency.

Speaking at the event, Tella said the decision was borne out of regional solidarity and the party’s resolve to back a fellow South-Westerner. He described President Tinubu as the “father of the nation” and called on party faithful to give their full support.

> “We will support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Though he is in the opposition, let us support our own from the South West. Our support is for Tinubu, and we will stand by him. The whole of the South West will give him our votes in 2027,” Tella declared.

He, however, stressed the need for free and fair elections, both for the bye-election and the 2027 general polls, warning against electoral malpractice.

> “This election must be fair and just. We are not going to submit to any harassment or intimidation on Saturday. This constituency is our stronghold, and we are confident of victory,” he added.

The Remo Federal Constituency seat became vacant following the death of the former Deputy Chief Whip of the House of Representatives, Hon. Adewunmi Onanuga, in December 2024. The constituency comprises Sagamu, Remo North, and Ikenne Local Government Areas.

Also speaking at the event, PDP National Vice Chairman (South West), Hon. Kamorudeen Ajisafe, announced that the party’s Zonal Secretariat has been temporarily relocated to Ogun State for the duration of the bye-election, in a move aimed at boosting campaign coordination.

Ajisafe decried what he described as the “coercive and desperate defection tactics” of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), insisting that the party’s failures cannot be hidden by political manoeuvring.

> “No amount of political intimidation or forced defections can distract Nigerians from the reality of APC’s abysmal performance,” Ajisafe said.

Meanwhile, the party’s 2023 governorship candidate in Ogun State, Hon. Oladipupo Adebutu, also threw his weight behind Tinubu’s reelection, linking the move to PDP’s commitment to ensuring a credible bye-election.

> “Our support for Tinubu is to ensure a peaceful and fair election. This constituency is our fortress—we won 34 out of 35 wards here in 2023,” Adebutu stated.

The PDP candidate for the bye-election, Bola Oluwole, called on Governor Dapo Abiodun to guarantee a peaceful and transparent process, warning against any form of electoral malpractice.

The unusual endorsement of a sitting president from a rival party is already generating national interest, with observers keen to see how this affects both the bye-election and the broader political landscape ahead of 2027.
