Led by Head Coach Rena Wakama, the resilient Nigerian side defeated Mali 78–64 in a pulsating final played Sunday night at the Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. The victory marks the team’s seventh overall Afrobasket championship win.

In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu commended the team’s exceptional performance, praising their “skill, resilience, determination, and teamwork” which he said brought pride and glory to the nation.

“Your superb performance throughout the competition has made Nigeria proud. Like the Super Falcons, you have inspired our young ladies,” President Tinubu said. “You embodied the indomitable Nigerian spirit, the power of unity, and the rewards of hard work.”

He also acknowledged the team’s grit in overcoming an early setback, having lost the first quarter of the final, and hailed their comeback as a testament to their fighting spirit.

The President lauded Coach Wakama and her technical crew for their leadership and appreciated the Nigeria Basketball Federation for their steadfast support.

“The Federal Government and Nigerians will never forget the sacrifices and remain grateful for your highly elevating performances,” Tinubu said, assuring the team of continued support ahead of the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup qualifying tournaments scheduled for March next year.

President Tinubu expressed eagerness to host the triumphant team in Abuja and wished them a safe return journey.
