Popular Nigerian comedian, Acapella, has weighed in on the recent hike in Netflix subscription prices, offering a candid take on the realities of global pricing and the economic challenges faced by Nigerians.
Reacting to the new rates — with the Netflix Premium plan now costing ₦8,500 — Acapella noted that despite the complaints, the same service costs as much as £24 in the UK. He pointed out that streaming platforms like Netflix largely operate in Nigeria with external funding, hinting that their continued presence in the country may be tied to factors beyond just providing subscription-based entertainment services.
“One day we’ll accept the truth for what it is,” the comedian wrote. “E sure me say e get other things asides providing SaaS service wey make some of these companies still dey Naija.”
He also addressed critics who accused him of clout-chasing, stating, “Lovers of Nigeria say I dey chase clout. Funny enough, many of them can’t even afford to do a monthly Netflix subscription.”
His comments come in the wake of Netflix’s third price hike in less than a year, amidst worsening inflation, a falling naira, and recent tariff increases by telecom and satellite TV providers in Nigeria.
