Former Governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido, has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of supporting the annulment of the historic June 12, 1993 election by then military ruler, General Ibrahim Babangida.
Speaking on Arise Television, Lamido dismissed Tinubu’s claims of being a key figure in Nigeria’s pro-democracy struggle, calling his rhetoric “highly entertaining.” He claimed Tinubu only became politically relevant after General Sani Abacha seized power.
“Tinubu was part of those who supported IBB’s annulment of the June 12 election. His own mother, Hajia Mogaji, mobilised Lagos market women to Abuja to back Babangida,” Lamido alleged.
He further argued that the pro-democracy group NADECO, often associated with Tinubu, was formed to fight Abacha’s regime—not to restore the June 12 mandate.
Lamido’s remarks challenge the popular narrative of Tinubu’s democratic activism and stir debate on the true heroes of Nigeria’s democratic journey.
