After months of political tension in Rivers State, hope for peace was reignited on Thursday, June 27, when images emerged of President Bola Tinubu smiling alongside Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, and suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara. The photos followed a crucial peace meeting aimed at resolving the lingering crisis between Wike and his estranged political godson, Fubara.

Sources at the meeting disclosed that Governor Fubara’s reinstatement comes with four stringent conditions:

1. No Second Term Bid: Fubara has reportedly agreed to serve only one term and not seek re-election in 2027.

2. Defection to APC: The governor will dump the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), aligning with the South-South’s shift to the ruling party.

3. Hands-Off LG Elections: He will conduct local government elections without nominating any candidates, paving the way for Wike-backed officials to return.

4. Purge of Political Allies: Fubara must distance himself from key allies including the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Tammy Danagogo, and CoS Dr. Edison Ehie, with Wike regaining control of key appointments.

The deal also includes settling outstanding allowances of the 27 pro-Wike lawmakers to stave off impeachment threats.

If upheld, these terms not only pave the way for Fubara’s return but also solidify Wike’s grip on the political structure ahead of the 2027 elections.
