LONDON – Reports have emerged confirming that Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari, is currently hospitalized in London, where he has been receiving medical treatment since April.
According to multiple family sources, what was initially scheduled as a routine medical check-up unexpectedly escalated into a full-scale hospital admission following a sudden deterioration in his health. While the specific nature of the illness and the name of the hospital remain undisclosed, close aides have confirmed the development.
Garba Shehu, Buhari’s longtime spokesperson, officially confirmed the news, assuring Nigerians that the former president is responding positively to treatment.
“Following your inquiry, I wish to state as follows: It is true that the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, is unwell. He has been receiving treatment in the UK,” Shehu said. “You would recall he made it known that he was going for his annual medical check-up. He became ill there, but I am happy to announce to you that he is doing well in his recovery while receiving treatment. We pray for his healthy recovery.”

His first recorded medical trip was in February 2016 for an undisclosed ailment. In June of the same year, he received treatment for an ear infection. By January 2017, he returned to London for a “routine” medical check-up, spending 50 days. Perhaps most notably, in May 2017, Buhari spent 104 consecutive days in London for treatment—raising questions about his fitness for office at the time.
