The Labour Party (LP) has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to its former presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Gregory Obi, demanding that he formally resigns from the party following his involvement with a newly formed political coalition.
In a strongly worded statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, the party distanced itself from the coalition, describing it as a gathering of “desperate, recycled, and frustrated politicians” whose only interest is the pursuit of power and not the welfare of Nigerians.
“The Labour Party is not part of the so-called coalition, and we reaffirm our non-alignment. We believe that those forming the coalition are individuals who have, over the years, contributed to Nigeria’s socio-political decay,” the statement read.

The party accused Obi of holding secret meetings with some of its members, lobbying them to join him in the new political movement. It also noted that while some have declined to defect, any member of LP currently involved in the coalition must resign from the party within 48 hours.

“We are not a party for individuals with dual loyalties. You cannot be in Labour Party in the morning and in another coalition by evening. The party will not tolerate such duplicity,” Ifoh warned.
LP expressed concern that the coalition’s claim of building a “New Nigeria” is deceptive, especially as it includes politicians who represent the old political order that the Nigerian youth are striving to reject.
“Nearly 70 percent of Nigeria’s population are youths. These young people are tired of the gerontocratic stranglehold on the nation. The New Nigeria they envision cannot be birthed by opportunistic politicians trying to relaunch themselves into relevance,” the statement continued.
The party reiterated its commitment to leading the country toward meaningful change and urged its members to remain steadfast and loyal ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“The Labour Party remains the viable platform for achieving the Nigeria of our dreams. We call on all party faithful to stand firm and keep the party structure intact,” the statement concluded.
