The Federal Ministry of Education has expressed deep appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his decision to rename the University of Maiduguri in Borno State after the late President Muhammadu Buhari. The institution will now be known as Muhammadu Buhari University of Maiduguri.

In a statement signed by the Director of Press and Public Relations, Boriowo Folasade, the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa CON, described the move as a “statesmanlike decision” that honours the enduring legacy of the former president.

 

The renaming was announced during a special session of the expanded Federal Executive Council (FEC) convened by President Tinubu to celebrate Buhari’s contributions to national development. The session featured a tribute by the President highlighting Buhari’s leadership in national security, institutional reform, economic recovery, and anti-corruption efforts.

 

Also present at the session were key national figures including the Senate President, H.E. Godswill Akpabio; Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas; state governors; ministers; and heads of federal agencies. Yusuf Buhari, son of the late president, spoke on behalf of the Buhari family in appreciation.

 

The Ministry noted that the decision to rename the university reflects not just empathy, but also a strong belief in education as a foundation for national growth. Dr. Alausa stated, “President Tinubu’s decision reflects not only deep empathy and respect but also a firm belief in education as the bedrock of national development. His commitment to human capital development is unwavering and consistent with the path of national renewal that President Buhari championed.”

 

The ministry emphasized that education remains a cornerstone for national identity and sustainable development and pledged to continue upholding values of service, integrity, and excellence exemplified by both former President Muhammadu Buhari and President Bola Tinubu.
