Nigerian Afrobeat superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has stirred fresh controversy around the political future of his uncle and Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, following speculations of the governor’s impending defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The rumours, which have been gaining traction over recent weeks, were further ignited by a video snippet of Davido’s yet-to-be-released single, in which the award-winning artiste sang lines interpreted as political metaphors: “new broom go sweep better” and “from umbrella to broom.” The lyrics are widely believed to reference the iconic party symbols of the APC (broom) and PDP (umbrella), respectively.
Governor Adeleke’s recent visit to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at his Lagos residence during the Eid al-Adha celebrations — accompanied by Davido and his brother, Deji Adeleke — had initially set tongues wagging about a possible political shift. Though both Governor Adeleke and the APC had previously dismissed the defection claims as mere speculation, the new lyrics by Davido have reignited public debate.
The situation unfolds amid reports of internal crisis and widespread defections from the PDP in Osun State, casting further doubt on the stability of the party’s structure in the region.
However, the alleged move has not gone down well with some APC stakeholders in the state. Speaking on national television Tuesday night, former APC National Secretary and ex-Deputy Governor of Osun State, Senator Iyiola Omisore, expressed disapproval over the manner in which the governor’s alleged defection was unfolding.
“All politics is local,” Omisore stated. “I have never seen a governor trying to bulldoze his way into another party through social media. Neither the party leadership nor the elders’ caucus is aware of Governor Adeleke’s plan.”
As uncertainty continues to swirl, political analysts are closely watching developments in Osun, with many speculating that the governor’s next moves could significantly reshape the state’s political landscape.
