Abuja – The statutory National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Labour Party (LP) has elected Senator Usman Nenadi as the Interim National Chairman and Senator Darlington Nwokocha as the Interim National Secretary. The appointments were made during a high-level NEC meeting held in Abuja on Friday, signaling a fresh start for the party’s leadership.

The newly inaugurated interim working committee is tasked with steering the party’s affairs until a national convention is held to elect a substantive NEC. The meeting also ratified a schedule for congresses at all levels — ward, local government, state, zonal — culminating in the national convention.
According to resolutions reached during the gathering, the National Secretariat of the Labour Party has been mandated to release clear guidelines and timelines to ensure transparent, credible, and democratic elections across all tiers of the party.
The meeting was attended by key stakeholders, including the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero, and the Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, the party’s only elected governor.
Speaking at the event, Comrade Ajaero reaffirmed the NLC’s commitment to the Labour Party, describing it as the true political platform of the Nigerian masses.
“The Labour Party remains the hope of the common man. We must not be discouraged by the challenges we are currently facing,” Ajaero stated.
Governor Alex Otti echoed similar sentiments, stressing the need to restructure and rebrand the party to ensure its long-term viability and effectiveness.
“This meeting is in compliance with the Supreme Court judgment which affirmed Senator Nenadi as the party’s authentic national chairman. The court has spoken, and as law-abiding citizens, we are following its directive,” Otti explained.
Taking a swipe at the Julius Abure-led faction, Otti urged them to respect the decision of the apex court and support the party’s efforts at reconciliation and rebuilding.
“Anyone who is not working with the Labour movement but claims to be the chairman of this party is only daydreaming. When the time comes, we will make it clear who truly represents us,” the governor warned.
He also emphasized unity, humility, and focus as crucial elements for the party’s survival and progress, while acknowledging the NLC’s foundational role in establishing the Labour Party.
“Yes, the NLC gave birth to this party, and we appreciate that. But today, the Labour Party is much bigger than the NLC. We must all work together to reposition it for the greater good,” Otti concluded.
The party is now expected to release a formal schedule of activities in the coming days as it prepares for its next phase of internal democratic processes.
