The management of Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital (OAUTH), Ile Ife, has sacked over 1500 workers employed in June 2022 following the directive of the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof Muhammad Pate who ordered an investigation into allegations of job racketeering by former acting CMD, Prof Afolabi Owojuyigbe who employed 1,973 staff as against the waiver for 450 vacancies granted to the hospital by the FG in the 2022 employment process.

It would be recalled that OAUTH was given a waiver to recruit 450 health workers, but 1973 additional employment offers were granted above the number.

The Ministry of Health and Social Welfare had in November 2023 indicted some officials of the teaching hospital including a former Acting Chief Medical Director, Prof Afolabi Owojuyigbe, of allegedly engaging in job racketeering.
