The Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN), Abia State Chapter, has issued a 21-day ultimatum to the Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, demanding the full implementation of financial and administrative autonomy for the Abia State House of Assembly.
In a letter dated June 10, 2024, and signed by the Chairman, Comrade Sunday Kalu and Secretary, Comrade Ugochuwku Ucheka, PASAN highlighted the poor performance of the Abia State Chapter since the suspension of the national strike in October 2023. The strike was initiated to address issues related to financial and administrative autonomy for state Houses of assembly and the implementation of the Consolidated Legislative Salary Structure (CONLESS).
The letter emphasized that despite directives from the national leadership of PASAN and the consent of the Abia State Chapter Congress on June 10, 2024, there has been no progress. Consequently, PASAN Abia State Chapter is demanding the establishment of the Abia State House of Assembly Service Commission, which they assert is long overdue.
Additionally, PASAN has requested the approval and implementation of the CONLESS for the workers of the Abia State House of Assembly. Failure to grant these requests by July 5, 2024, will result in the resumption of the suspended strike.
The letter was copied to several key stakeholders, including the National President of PASAN, the Director of the State Security Service in Abia State, the Commissioner of Police, and the NLC Chairman of the Abia State Council.
The association expressed hope for a favorable response from the Governor, emphasizing the urgency and importance of their demands.
