In a bold statement released today, Ngwa Rangers vehemently denounced the unprecedented actions of Abia State House of Assembly Speaker, Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa, during a recent press briefing. The incident, which occurred on June 27, 2024, saw the forceful ejection of journalist Kingsley Chibuike from ENYIMBA TV and RADIO LTD, marking a stark departure from democratic norms in Abia State.
“This brazen assault on press freedom by Hon. Emeruwa is unacceptable,” declared Comrade Kingsley Ihesiaba, Publicity Secretary of Ngwa Rangers. “Never before has a speaker of our assembly resorted to such autocratic measures to silence the press. It sets a dangerous precedent and undermines the fundamental rights of citizens.”
The press release emphasized the egregious nature of the Speaker’s actions, attributing them to Mr. Chibuike’s history of posing tough questions. Ngwa Rangers underscored their unwavering support for journalistic independence and demanded an immediate apology from Speaker Emeruwa to Mr. Chibuike, the press community, and the people of Abia State.
“As defenders of democracy, we insist on accountability and respect for the constitutionally guaranteed freedoms of expression and information,” the statement continued. “Ngwa Rangers calls upon all citizens to stand united against such attempts to stifle the press, a vital pillar of our democracy.”
The release concluded with a rallying cry to fellow journalists, urging them to remain steadfast in their pursuit of truth and to continue holding those in power accountable.
