A member of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) was found dead in his residence in Abuja on Monday in what is suspected to be a case of suicide. The operative, identified only as a member of Course 5 of the EFCC Academy, has not been publicly named as of Wednesday morning.
Details regarding the manner of his death or the exact location of his residence remain undisclosed. EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale confirmed the incident to PR Nigeria, stating that an investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the death.
“We are looking into various factors, including potential mental health issues and family challenges, that could have led to this tragic event,” Oyewale said. The EFCC has stated that no further information, including the deceased’s name, will be released until the investigation is complete.
### Not the First Case
This incident marks the second time in recent years that an EFCC operative has been suspected of committing suicide. In 2019, the Edo State Police Command investigated the death of Williams Oyibogare, another EFCC operative, who was found dead in his Benin home. Bottles of the pesticide Sniper and a suicide note were reportedly discovered at the scene.
At the time, then-EFCC spokesperson Wilson Uwujaren confirmed Oyibogare’s death and noted that the commission was awaiting the police investigation results before making further comments. Chidi Nwabuzor, the Police Public Relations Officer for the Edo State Command, stated that the police were awaiting autopsy results to determine the cause of death.
“Investigations are ongoing, and it is too early to draw any conclusions. An autopsy will be conducted to ascertain the cause of death and the circumstances surrounding it,” Nwabuzor said.
The EFCC continues to investigate the recent incident, emphasizing the need to understand the factors contributing to such tragedies within the organization.
