The Nigerian Police Force (NPF) has arrested a 24-year-old woman, Blessing Okonkwo, who confessed to selling her three-year-old sibling, Friday Okonkwo, for N410,000. The incident took place in Adamawa State, where Blessing tricked her mother and took the child under the false pretence of enrolling him in a school in Mubi, a city 40 kilometers away.
According to Sahara Reporters, Blessing Okonkwo cited severe economic hardship as her motivation for the crime. She sold her sibling to Efunaya Nabufe, 35, who then trafficked the child to Enugu, in southeastern Nigeria.
Blessing admitted to using the proceeds from the sale to purchase a grinding machine to start a business and gave her boyfriend N200,000 to buy items required for their traditional wedding.
The authorities have detained both individuals involved in the crime, and further investigations are ongoing. The Nigerian Police Force urges the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to child trafficking and exploitation.
