… Highlights Benefits and Efficiency of e-CMR to Curb Violent Crimes
The Nigeria Police Force has spotlighted the benefits and efficiency of the newly implemented electronic Central Motor Registry (e-CMR) in its efforts to enhance vehicle safety and curb violent crimes. The e-CMR initiative aims to create a comprehensive database of all types of vehicles, including motorcycles, by collecting data from vehicle owners and flagging vehicles reported as stolen.
The e-CMR will provide the Police with real-time access to detailed vehicle data, preventing multiple registrations and aiding in the collation of biometric and other relevant information. This initiative is expected to significantly enhance national security and contribute to the incident report portal used by various government agencies.
Contrary to circulating rumors, the Nigeria Police Force clarified that the e-CMR is not a revenue-generating platform but a digitalization effort to improve policing and ensure the safety of lives and property across Nigeria.
Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has ordered the immediate suspension of the proposed enforcement of the e-CMR, initially scheduled to begin on July 29, 2024. This suspension aims to allow for a comprehensive public enlightenment campaign about the process, benefits, and effectiveness of the e-CMR in addressing vehicle-related crimes and protecting vehicle ownership.
The public is encouraged to obtain the digitalized CMR certificate online at [cmris.npf.gov.ng](http://cmris.npf.gov.ng). For further inquiries, individuals can contact the 24/7 hotline (02018870133), CMR Command Centre at FHQ Abuja (08117777666, 09169892000), and FHQ Annex Lagos (08117777555, 09169891000). Technical support is also available at cmrtech@npfcmr.ng.
The Police urge all Nigerian residents to embrace the e-CMR system. Meanwhile, IGP Egbetokun has directed police officers to refrain from requesting e-CMR certificates from the public, warning that any officer found exploiting or extorting individuals over the lack of e-CMR certificates will face sanctions. Enforcement will be carried out exclusively by designated officers and has been postponed until further notice.
