Abuja, Nigeria
The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has issued directives to ensure the protection of participants in the upcoming #EndBadGovernance protest scheduled for August 1 to 10, 2024.
This directive was conveyed in a response letter from the IGP to prominent human rights lawyer, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN). Adegboruwa had formally requested police coverage for the protesters on July 26, 2024.
In his response dated July 29, 2024, IGP Egbetokun instructed senior police officers to comply with Adegboruwa’s request. The response letter, signed by Egbetokun’s Principal Staff Officer, CP Johnson Adenola, affirmed the police’s commitment to safeguarding the demonstrators.
Additionally, the IGP requested a meeting with Adegboruwa in Abuja on Tuesday, July 30, 2024, to further discuss the security arrangements for the protest.
The #EndBadGovernance protest is anticipated to draw significant public attention, and this move by the IGP underscores the police force’s dedication to upholding citizens’ rights to peaceful assembly and expression.
