The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, conducted a virtual meeting on July 30, 2024, with prominent legal practitioners Femi Falana (SAN) and Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa (SAN), along with key members of the Take It Back Movement. The meeting aimed to ensure the safety and security of citizens while upholding the constitutional right to peaceful assembly amid the planned nationwide protest.
IGP Egbetokun emphasized the necessity of maintaining public order and safety during the protests. He affirmed the group’s right to express their concerns through peaceful means and reiterated the Police Force’s role in facilitating such rights within legal boundaries.
The IGP advised the Take It Back Movement to engage with respective State Police Commissioners to plan the protests in a way that ensures the safety of participants and the public. He highlighted the importance of pre-empting any security challenges and ensuring peaceful proceedings. Furthermore, he strongly recommended avoiding unplanned and unnecessary street processions due to potential dangers. He stressed that coordination with the Police and other security agencies is crucial to mitigate risks, protect citizens’ rights, and ensure the well-being of all involved.
The IGP reiterated the Force’s commitment to protecting the rights of all citizens and ensuring the safety and security of public gatherings. He called on all stakeholders to collaborate in fostering a peaceful and secure environment during the planned protests.
